Foundation for Success
All journeys need planning and preparation. Some people spend more time planning their vacation than they do on planning their life’s journey. Success in any endeavor requires proper planning. Architects have to prepare detailed blueprints before a house is built. Can you imagine building a house without any blueprints? What kind of a house would you end up with?
“A wise man built his house upon a rock,
And the rain descended, and the floods came,
And the winds blew, and beat upon that house,
And it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock.
A foolish man built his house upon the sand,
And the rain descended, and the floods came,
And the winds blew, and beat upon that house,
And it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Matthew 7: 24-27
The following fable by Aesop clearly amplifies the importance of planning in advance.
The Ant and the Grasshopper
In a field one summer’s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An Ant walked by, grunting as he carried a plump kernel of corn.
“Where are you off with that heavy thing?” asked the Grasshopper.
Without stopping, the Ant replied “To our ant hill. This is the third kernel I have delivered today.”
“Why not come and sing with me” said the Grasshopper, “instead of working so hard?”
“I am helping to store food for the winter,” said the Ant, “and think you should do the same.”
“Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper, “we have plenty of food right now.”
But the Ant went on its way and continued its work.
The weather soon turned cold. All the food lying in the field was covered with a thick white blanket of snow that even the Grasshopper could not dig
through. Soon the Grasshopper found itself dying of hunger.
He staggered to the ants’ hill and saw them handing out corn from the stores they had collected in the summer.
Then the Grasshopper knew:
It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.
There are some very important lessons that we can derive from this fable:
- If we do not define our priorities and take the right actions, then later in life we may find ourselves facing adversities.
- If we do not prepare for our future, what rewards do you think might be awaiting us?
- To reap a harvest, first we have to sow the seeds.
- Knowing what challenges lie ahead will motivate us to take the most appropriate actions today.
